Child Care

Student parents at the University of Applied Sciences and the College of Music

For student parents, care and raising of one or several children during their course of study is a special burden. On the one hand, the possibility to freely schedule their time is limited; on the other, courses and exams impose strict deadlines.

This double load can be handled more easily if parents can turn their children over relatively early to a loving and educationally sensitive support institution for hours at a time. Ten years ago, a parents’ initiative founded the association “Children at Lippe College e.V.”, in order to find a solution to this problem With the support of the Equal-Opportunity Commission of the University of Applied Sciences, the crèche Paulinchen in Detmold was established as a place of appropriate care for children.

The Paulinchen facility has been in operation at the Detmold site of the University of Applied Sciences since the spring of 2000.
The University renovated space in the former horse veterinary clinic at the Emilie Campus on Bielefelder Straße for the play group. Children aged 1-3 who do not yet have a right to a kindergarten space, are looked after and cared for in two arranged play rooms, a kitchen, a sanitary room, a sleeping room and a baby changing room, suitably equipped for age
Paulinchen is funded by subsidies from the University of Applied Sciences, the Detmold College of Music and their student parliaments as well as the city of Detmold, and is also dependent on membership dues and regular donations. As of 1 August 2008, Paulinchen has been financed under the Children’s Education Law (KiBis) of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Information will be provided in due time as to the resulting changes and the reformed structure.

The concept: Care for children under three

The educational strategy of Paulinchen includes three main points which are brought together in the educational work.

-       The concept of the situation-related approach

-       A concept based on the education system and the philosophy of Emmi Pickler

-       “Learning to move means conquering your environment.”

In surroundings carefully prepared by the educators, independent development is supported, and the children’s natural impulse to movement promoted.
The goal is to strengthen the physical, intellectual and spiritual well-being of the child, and to offer him or her a familiar atmosphere. Singing supported by a piano is designed to activate the senses further. Speaking English verses activates the sense of language.
This strategy uniform in the educational work is developed for children between the ages of four months to three years. The stage of development of every single child is always taken into account.
