Compressors/Turbo Engines and Fluid Dynamics

The flow technology laboratory provides basic knowledge in the fields of power engines and machines. Pumps, fans, water and steam turbines are used to broaden this knowledge by designing, experimental testing and the consolidation of the course contents. In addition to this the annexed acoustics laboratory allows tests to be carried out to reduce the amount of noise produced by compressors and turbo engines.

The laboratory has some test benches equipped with the latest in measuring technology. One of the main issues of the application-oriented research in the field of hydraulic machines is the examination of forces applied to single-blade waste water pump impellers on a test bench that automatically records the measuring data. These studies are sponsored by the regional industry.

Modern flow simulations using the ANSYS CFX program complete the course and are offered by the flow technology laboratory as an efficient and practically relevant research and development tool.

Another prime issue is the development of processes needed to separate multicomponent mixtures with a small particle diameter. These mixtures are an industrial waste product which – after a successful separation – allow the individual components to be reused. This process is being optimized in the laboratory to achieve a practical application. Other research projects  are carried out in co-operation with the Forschungsvereinigung für Luft- und Trocknungstechnik (FLT) together with the regional blower and ventilator industry and show how closely the university is working together with the local industry.

Further information about this laboratory is only given in German.
