Fields of mechatronics study
Electronic systems
The field of mechatronics studies covers mechatronics focussing on electrical, electronic and data processing technologies. A typical application example are numerically controlled electromotive drives. Students completing the electronic systems field of mechatronics studies are three-quarter electrical engineers with an additional broad basic mechanical engineering training.
Precision mechanical systems
Compared to traditional mechanical engineering produces, many products associated with mechatronics are marked by a completely different design and fabrication of the mechanical components: small and precise, often made of synthetic materials making full use of the technical capabilities offered by this specific group of materials. The technical principles of this technology are not taught in the mechanical engineering courses. They are a substantial part of this field of studies. The field of studies has been established on the initiative and with the assistance of a local industrial enterprise with a worldwide reputation on the “electromechanical connection technology” product sector.
The mechatronics courses focussing on precision mechanical systems contain many elements of the traditional precision mechanics studies but delimits the fields of mechanical and electrical/electronic solutions to match the current state-of-the-art technology.
Studying without selecting a specific field of study
In order to allow students to organize their studies as they please, they can make their own choice of elective compulsory technical subjects on the proviso that a minimum of 30 credits is maintained and that certain basic conditions are met.
Students of course have to take care that such a choice is constructive in terms of the knowledge to be acquired and the exams to be passed. In this particular case the male or female student is more accountable than if he or she decides to take part in one of the stipulated fields of study where the department already provides a useful combination of courses.
Care must also be taken that the selected lectures fit in with the timetable. This may also require a certain amount of initiative.
In order not to make a mistake, it is recommended to request a professor to give you a course guidance service or to ask for information from the examination board.
