Computer Networks and Industrial Automation (Prof. Jasperneite)

Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Jürgen Jasperneite
Type : Bachelor/Master
Research area : more projects
Short description :

In the following areas of computer networks and Industrial Automation we are offering  bachelor and master topis continously.  This topics are strongly related to the current research activities of our institute.

  • Research topics at the Lemgoer Modellfabrik (partly together with Fraunhofer IOSB-INA):
    • Concepts and Implementation of concepts for future agility of Machines and Plants
    • Virtual Design and Commissioning
    • Concepts and Implementation for the Energy-efficient Operation of Machines and Plants (Green Production)
    • Asset Management
    • reliable Teleoperation
    • Integration of field devices to the process control system
    • localized services for the human machine interaction
    • Distributed Automation with IEC 61499
  • Protocol-Engineering (general): Protocol Engineering is a Methodology for designing and testing of computer networks. For this domain formal description techniques like UML and SDL together with tool support are available.  With this means executable specifications and the automated generation of code becomes possible.
  • Performance Evaluation of Computer Networks: Communication systems which shall be used in future industrial automation systems, must meet  special requirements like real-time. For the performabce evaluation of computer networks event discrete simulation is a appropriate approach. With a focus to IEEE802-based technologies several systems are candidates for investigations. You should have skills in the programming language C and basic knowledge in statistics.   The following systems shall be evaluated:
  • Implementation of Computer Networks: A very exciting technique to implement embedded systems as system-on-chip solutions is to use FPGAs and Hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog.
    • Ethernet AVB (Audio Video Bridging) demonstrator based on a Broadcom network processor
    • Implementation of a lightweight IPv6 stack for a embedded system
  • Testing of Computer Networks: Especially for open networked systems the verification of the interoperability between different implementations and the conformance of a implementation to the specification is of crucial importance. In this field test tools and standardized test languages like TTCN-3 are ermerging.
    • Test case derivation from formal models
  • Application of Computer Networks and Automation
    • Using a mobile phone as telecontrol for intelligent building automation
    • Reliable teleoperation and automation of an astronomical observatory located in france
