Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe

University of Applied Sciences

At the beginning of 2008, the Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe – University of Applied Sciences was renamed the Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe – University of Applied Sciences. The university has three campuses: Lemgo, Detmold and Höxter. The establishment’s new name is an expression of its close ties with the region of Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL: East Westphalia Lippe). OWL is situated in North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW), western Germany, as shown at this map. The city of Hannover is 100 kilometres to the east and Cologne is 200 kilometres to the southwest of the university.

The Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe – University of Applied Sciences emanated from the Fachhochschule Lippe – University of Applied Sciences, which was founded in 1971 (with sites in Lemgo and Detmold), and the Höxter University of Applied Sciences department, which was part of Paderborn University. Since the beginning of 2002, the new umbrella higher education institution has added to its strong technological and scientific departments other courses of study involving ecological and sociological aspects, economics, design and language instruction, to name just a few.

Each campus is characterised by its courses of study:

Lemgo is home to the classic engineering disciplines (Production Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science), supplemented by new courses such as Media Production, Wood Technology and Economics. Food Technology is unique to the Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe – University of Applied Sciences in NRW.

Detmold, which focuses on disciplines involving construction, attracts attention nationwide. Interior Design and the international degree programme Industrial Engineering – Construction are unique to the Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe – University of Applied Sciences in NRW.

Höxter has made a name for itself as a campus dedicated to ecological aspects in the teaching of its technical degree programmes and in applied research. This aspect applies not only to Landscape Architecture, which is unique to the Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe – University of Applied Sciences in NRW, but also to Environmental Engineering.

Our concept
The Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe – University of Applied Sciences is a higher education institution “in the region” and “for the region”, albeit with an international outlook. Most of our students come from the districts of Lippe and Höxter, and neighbouring districts in NRW and Lower Saxony. We have excellent contacts to local industries and businesses, which have collaborated with us to develop new courses of study.

The quality of teaching and study is the primary objective of the Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe – University of Applied Sciences. Moreover, the scope of duties involving further education and applied R&D are growing in importance.

Our study programmes
Our study programmes prepare students for the world of work from the word go. Practice orientation is the hallmark of studying at universities of applied sciences. Highlighting this seal of approval as a guide for prospective students is relevant at this point in time, especially now that universities of applied sciences and universities both offer Bachelor and Master programmes with supposedly the same content.

At the Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe – University of Applied Sciences, scientific knowledge and methods are conveyed in stage I studies, generally lasting three semesters. During stage II studies, the knowledge gained is explored in further detail and applied in the lab. Thanks to our close cooperation with industry, it is commonplace for our students to carry out work placements and prepare theses in companies. Studies are rounded off by periods of study abroad and (voluntary) practical semesters.

We attach great importance to giving our students a comprehensive education. This is why we offer a plethora of extra-curriculum courses to supplement conventional studies: language courses, presentation techniques, working with media, conflict management, and much else besides.

The range of courses is rounded off by so-called “cooperative study programmes”, initiated in collaboration with industry. Students enrolled in cooperative programmes study for four days a week and spend the fifth day at the work bank. Conventional recess periods do not exist here.

Our cooperative partners
Applied R&D is realised in collaboration with partners, frequently medium-sized companies. We generate ideas for theses to be written at companies and for larger projects supervised by professors. Vice-versa, companies offer students work placements and the opportunity to carry out practical semesters, giving them a taste of what to expect in their later professional lives.

Our principles
Members of our establishment have elaborated seven principles for the Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe – University of Applied Sciences. Realising these principles is the programmatic task of all those active at the university. Our principles are:

⁃    We offer quality in teaching, research and development.
⁃    We constantly strive to improve.
⁃    We work collaboratively – for all to see.
⁃    We take initiative and are performance-oriented.
⁃    We work in a customer-oriented, efficient manner.
⁃    We are a regional higher education institution with a supraregional outlook.
⁃    We create an attractive working, study and living environment.
