OWL UAS focuses on clear profiles in leading edge fields of application-oriented research. They provide the necessary research issues for the master course programs in the various departments of the university, make cooperative doctorates possible and offer a wide cooperation basis in the main fields of know-how for companies and partners.

Intelligent Automation: This leading edge field is situated at the Institute Industrial IT (inIT). InIT has a leading position in the field of industrial information technology and carries out research in the field of industrial informatics and industrial automation for Cyber-physical systems.
Food Technology: The second leading edge field is food technology situated at the ILT.NRW – Institute for Food Technologies.NRW. Food, food safety and the quality of food with a variety of aspects is the focus of the research activity.

Intelligent Energy Systems: The research focus offers interdisciplinary solutions for safe, clean and efficient energy. The aim is to ensure a resource-saving energy supply and usage in the power supply networks for domestic energy supply and in manufacturing plants. Necessary measures would be the development of producing, storing and transforming energy.
Cultural Landscape: Preservation and development of cultural heritage is a high level social concern. Landscapes in particular belong to cultural heritage. Cultural landscapes embody man-made intended uses (values and objectives) and make the usage of the natural environment (techniques) visible such as typical regional settlements or production areas.
Sustainable Water Management and Preventive Water Protection: The research focus covers issues on water pollution, organic water quality, water- and floodplain ecology as well as water development. In addition attention is paid to water management in the fields of geotechnology, waste management and disposal technology.
ProErgo – Ergonomic Design for Production Maschines in the Context of Industry 4.0: The research focus develop innovative ergonomic standards for production maschines. Research and development capabilities of three Departments and and the Fraunhofer Application Center have joined together.
DiMan - Direct Digital Manufacturing in the context of Industry 4.0: Enabling the physical and virtual consistency of the entire product realization process, starting with the definition of the requirements via prototyping through to production, is the overall objective. To achieve this, different innovative production technologies are involved, as well as new concepts of Human-Machine Interaction. The Research Focal Point DiMan considers itself as a partner for technology transfer.
Scientists from various fields of expertise have joined together interdisciplinary to form research groups so that research and development capabilities can be bundled.
ConstructionLab: The aim of the ConstructionLab is to enhance materials and products and their applications in architecture and interior architecture. In particular an interdisciplinary research group is working on facade concepts.
Innovative Materials: Around 70 per cent of all new and innovated products are based on new or improved materials. Therefore materials science and materials technology are key fields in innovation technology.
PerceptionLab: The research group gathers empirical knowledge through observation, analysis and perception of the human environmental behavior, combines it with planning practice and provides instruments for the creation and planning. Product-, space- and environmental optimization improvements are achieved through applied research. With results from studies on orientation, effect, acceptance and usability the PerceptionLab develops concepts and solutions for objects and rooms with particular attention to topics on Universal Design and on sustainable solutions.
urbanLab: The focus of this research group is urban and regional research between the two poles growth and shrinkage. The university departments 1, 3 and 9 in interdisciplinary cooperation develop innovative solutions for the varied challenges for provincials and towns in rural regions such as Ostwestfalen-Lippe. Here, the close cooperation with the communities and regions is important.
