Bachelor course of advanced power technology studies

General

In the light of an impending shortage of resources and the effects of the changes in climate, the supply and utilization of power will be the most important challenges which our society will have to take up. Coming power supply concepts and their technical realization must meet (ecological and economical) sustainability and climatic compatibility requirements.

The efficient use of conventional energy sources as well as the innovative utilization of regenerative sources of energy require well-trained male and female engineers. The course of advanced power technology studies tailored to the needs of the economy and their development in the future will help to remedy the current lack of qualified engineers.

Study goals

With the application-oriented interdisciplinary education the graduates obtain a sound knowledge of mechanical engineering, conventional power technology and renewable energies. They have a theoretical and practical competence in the development, planning, realization and operation of conventional and innovative power generating plants. They are able to handle appropriate engineering tasks in an efficient and practically relevant manner.

Target group

The course of advanced power technology studies primarily targets students interested in:

  • handling regenerative and conventional power technology issues in an engineering way,
  • playing an active part in the design and realization of innovative power supply concepts,
  • the development, conception and realization of power technology projects from the mechanical engineering and plant engineering points of view,
  • carrying on the development and/or optimization of future significant power supply technologies which are currently still in their infancy,

and who commit themselves to:

  • an ecological use of energy sources and power supply technologies which spares the climate.

Fields of activity

Owing to their broad mechanical engineering and power technology qualifications and the resultant wide variety of possible activities and jobs graduates are employees which are of interest to the following companies:

  • Energy and environmental engineering companies
  • Mechanical and plant engineering enterprises (power plant engineering, wind power, biogas plants, block-type thermal power stations, geothermics and solar thermics, fuels and drive units of the future)
  • Utility companies
  • Authorities (local administrations, regional administrations, ministries, governmental environmental protection offices)
  • Supervision and inspection authorities (TÜV, DEKRA, etc.)
  • Research and development institutions
  • Energy agencies and associations

Common assignments in these enterprises:

  • Development of process concepts for generating power and heat out of fossil and regenerative energy sources:
    - conventional power plant technology
    - power/heat coupling by means of gas and steam turbine power plants or block-type thermal power stations fired with biogas or vegetable oil
    - use of biomasses by fermentation, gasification or conversion to biofuels
    - heat pump technology
    - photo-voltaics, wind and hydrodynamic power as well as geothermics
  • Planning and calculating power generating plants
  • Developing and designing machine and plant components
  • Optimizing and operating power generating plants with due consideration given to issues such as economy, energy efficiency, protection of the environment and resources
  • Power station project management
  • Cost estimation for quotations

Other fields of activity include testing, trials, fabrication, assembly, commissioning and operation of plants as well as sales and marketing.
